Why Preach Romans?
10/2/2008 2:24:21 PM http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
"The Book of Romans has always been one of my favorites for two reasons. First, the doctrinal truths helped me understand justification, redemption and propitiation when I was a brand new Christian. I have never doubted my salvation in large part because I was encouraged to read this book as a new believer. I like this book for a second reason because I met my wife Beth in a Romans class at Moody Bible Institute. Reading this book always makes me think of her."
Teaching Students The Applicational Power Of The Big Idea
10/31/2008 2:23:44 PM http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
"Expository messages sometimes seem irrelevant. Often the reason is that the big idea is stated in exegetical, rather than applicational terms. This paper discusses how to teach students to use the big idea as the applicational core of the message."
Theology: A Master Key for Unlocking Application in Biblical Preaching
10/30/2008 2:23:05 PM http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
"Application is missing from many biblical sermons because preachers do not see a common link between the original audience and people hearing God’s word today. This paper explains how the theology of the biblical text links the modern audience to the original audience."
How to Share the Gospel Clearly
10/29/2008 2:22:02 PM http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
"Once, when I was invited to preach at an evangelistic rally in Dallas, the organizing pastor introduced me to a dear woman before the meeting. He had talked with her previously, but remained unsure whether she was saved or not. He left me alone with her, so I asked some "diagnostic" questions to find out for myself. I concluded that she did not really understand the Gospel, so I explained it to her as clearly as I could, then led her to place her faith in Christ."
Keep it Clear and Simple
10/28/2008 2:21:30 PM http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
What does a person have to believe in order to be saved? I have heard everything from "Believe in God" and "Obey the Ten Commandments" (or "Obey the Sermon on the Mount") to "Just believe that Jesus loves you."
The Number One Mistake Most Preachers and Communicators Make
10/27/2008 2:20:24 PM http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
"The past few days I've been in a seminar with Willie Jolley, one of the top motivational speakers in the country and a recent inductee into the Speaker's Hall of Fame, who shared the business side of motivational speaking with a few of us. It was a great experience and provided me with the kind of information I need as I begin this new part of God's journey for me. However, after I asked Willie the following question, "What would you say is the number one mistake that new speakers make as they begin their professional speaking careers?", it dawned on me that if someone asked me that question about preachers, I would know exactly how to answer that question."
How to Fix the Most Common Preaching/ Communication Problem
10/26/2008 2:19:29 PM http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
"Have you ever started a message and quickly come to the conclusion, they're not with me? It's a terrible feeling, isn't it? I like to call that the, "Hey God, this one's for you!" moment. None of us likes being there. It's pure pain. So, how do we get around that?"
Wayne Shaw on "The Lord's Supper, Baptism, and the Pulpit"
10/24/2008 2:48:14 PM http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
"The Lord’s Supper, baptism, and the pulpit are vital to each other. They are more than symbols, but they do have symbolic value. Baptism signals our initiation into Christ and his church. The Lord’s Supper reminds us of Christ’s death for our sins."
MEGACHURCHES: The Coach in the Pulpit
10/24/2008 2:47:16 PM http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
"College sports grow in popularity and appeal each year. The players on a team come and go, so the spotlight always falls on the head coach. The life of a college coach offers a good analogy for understanding the role of a megachurch senior minister."
Dean M. Christensen on "Integrity in the Pulpit"
10/24/2008 2:46:04 PM http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
Over the past several years, cheating and plagiarism have surfaced as hot topics in academia, the news media, and more recently, the church. Several high-profile cases involve pastors of large churches who resigned, or were fired or suspended for repeated instances of "borrowing" sermons from various sources without attribution.
Aaron Chambers, "Invisibility vs. Visibility"

". . . preaching puts a man in an awkward position where he has to capture people's attention only to redirect their attention to someone else."
Alan Larue on "How Can They Hear with a Preacher?"

"For some time I have been concerned about the future of the preaching ministry of our churches. In fact, I believe congregations with a paid ministry staff may already be facing a crisis."
David Erickson on "What Good is Preaching?
10/24/2008 2:39:12 PM http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
"It is 9:30 Sunday morning. The stage is set for a solitary spokesman to assume his place behind a public pulpit. As this speaker shuffles his notes into final arrangement, the audience before him is doing some arranging of their own. One by one they begin to assume a physical posture that will allow them to tolerate the coming session. Over the years they have become quite adept at learning to look alert, while, in fact, being aloof."
Eddie Lowen on "How to Preach Like an Amateur"

Preaching must be biblical, and might be expository. . . preaching must be personal, and might be original.
Chuck Sackett on "What’s Happening with Contemporary Preaching?"
10/24/2008 2:10:07 AM http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
Christian Standard. A critique if four emerging approaches to sermon writing. "Contemporary preaching has moved us in positive directions. It has forced us to take seriously the changing interests and worldviews of our listeners. It has reminded us that the message is critical, but so is the method. Contemporary preaching has caused all thoughtful preachers to ask if they are connecting with a changing world."
Chuck Sackett on "The Elusive Illustration: Letting the Text Provide"
10/23/2008 1:00:00 AM Dr. Chuck Sackett http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
Preaching.org. "Every preacher knows the challenge of finding the right image or illustration. Most have made friends with 10,000 Illustrations for Every Occasion (at least us old guys) or preachingonline.com or preachingtoday.com (this list is nearly endless). But is there a better way? At least a way that makes those tools as potent as possible?"
Barney Wells on "Preaching, Prayer, and Conflict"
10/22/2008 2:16:55 AM http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
Christian Standard. "Don’t wait until two or three weeks before a change and then rush in a barrage of sermons. Treat the topic as it comes up in the normal course of preaching through a book or series over several months. The bigger the change, the further in advance you should start preaching about the issues involved. Conflict can be prevented by making sure the entire congregation understands the biblical basis behind a change the church is making."
J. Michael Shannon on "Preaching at the Speed of Light"
10/20/2008 2:31:23 AM http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
Christian Standard. "The prospect of preaching adapting to modern times does not bother me. What concerns me is the number of those, even those friendly to the Christian faith, who wonder if preaching is outdated and if it will survive."
Gary Weedman on 'Preaching?' or 'Sharing?'
10/19/2008 2:29:11 AM http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
Christian Standard. ". . . it is helpful to think of these three categories of New Testament speech as concentric circles with the gospel at the core, expanding to the second circle of teaching about the gospel, expanding to the third circle of contemporary application of the teaching."
Mark Taylor on "The Problems with Original Preaching"
10/17/2008 2:28:07 AM http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
Christian Standard. "After weighing what our writers this week have said about stolen sermons, I’ve decided something: Originality can be overrated. Am I the only one who feels this way?"
J. Michael Shannon on "Finding Illustration Gold Mines"
10/15/2008 2:21:48 AM http://www.preacherstoolbox.com/Portals/0/RssFeeds/PreachersToolboxFeatured.xml
Christian Standard. "The way some people talk, one would think that illustrations are appendages to a sermon. A minister doesn’t write a sermon and then add illustrations. Illustrations are as much a part of the sermon as the reasoning or outline. Many ministers can testify that an illustration is frequently all people remember of a sermon."

It's Not What You Say
A few weeks ago Terri and I had the chance to hang with the amazing Frank Luntz and his posse in Myrtle Beach (that’s him with Hannity backstage at the Republican Presidential Debate). I hadn’t yet had the chance to read his latest book, “Win”...but quickly devoured it on my next couple flights. And, for anybody that depends on influencing others (which would be, ummm, everybody), the book is a must.Throughout “Win” (as well as Frank’s earlier works), he stresses that it is rarely what you say...but what people hear. Thus, those who win are those who craft their messages to resonate with what’s important to their audience.I thought of Frank and had to chuckle the other day as I prepared to depart Omaha. The flight attendant apologized to the first class cabin that she wouldn’t be able to serve a pre-flight cocktail because they were running late...and that she knew we all wanted the airline to maintain its on-time record.Actually...no, I don’t care about your on-time record.I want a drink.

How Well Do You Know Your Product?
I marvel at how so few owners and managers know their product. I mean really know it. As in live it. Use it. Experience every facet of it.It happened the other night in a hotel on a heavily traveled highway. If they were running at 30% occupancy that night, it would have been a miracle. Thus, the front desk manager had more than enough rooms to put all her guests on the non-highway side of the building. The side that looked out over the woods. It was the loudest hotel stay of my life. And, I’ve spent many a night at airport hotels and sandwiched between rooms of “lovers rollin' round in bed, screamin' as if they’re gonna die.”So, I had to ask myself, why not put everyone on the wooded side. Scared the hotel would tip over?Nah...it’s because whoever employs her has never spent the night in his hotel on the highway side. Of that, I am completely sure.

Admit it, Van Halen is a guilty pleasure. No longer hip...but there's still something about the band that attracts attention. Past the drama. The VH2 years with Sammy were sensational, but a departure from the core essence of the band. Which, of course, was Diamond David Lee Roth.Don't get me wrong...the driving force was always the Van Halen brothers. The essence, however, was Dave. And, now he's back. And somehow it feels right. Like comfort food. The subject matter may be so last decade...but, admit it. It's kinda fun to see them together again on this Music Friday.

Creepy...but Kinda Cool
Word from Wired (via Iconoculture) is that KLM Royal Dutch Airline will be debuting a new service called "Meet and Seat" this year, allowing passengers to select their seatmates based on their social media profiles. And, for all of us beautiful, trim and exceptionally interesting conversationalists, this sounds like a pretty cool idea. A little creepy...but cool.Except, I have this nagging image of all the people that never got selected for pick-up games in elementary school or asked out on dates all ending up awkwardly bunched together in the back.Or the front.

Whadya Expect to Find?
Whenever I hear of a local government choosing to put its contract for Destination Marketing up for bid, I have to suppress a giggle. OK...not a giggle. More like a chortle.Oh, it always sounds real good on the surface. Transparency. Accountability. Competition. Stuff like that. It's usually that somebody on Council has a bug up their butt about the DMO and uses the RFP process to make 'em sweat. Because, really, is any politician that cluesless to think that there are a bunch of DMOs hanging out around town, just waiting to bid on an RFP every three years? And for those that think DMOs are just glorified ad agencies...you gotta think again. What separates DMOs from any other organization or business that might covet such a contract is a deep understanding of the destination and a database of meeting and event planners that just can't be duplicated without years of effort. Thus, no matter how badly government may want to make a move, it can't...not without forfeiting a few years of serious productivity while the new "DMO" gets acclimated.Instead of jerking DMOs around with this type of childish gamesmanship, a government that is unsatisfied with its DMO should sit down and work with it to become the impact agency the community deserves. Honestly...it's the only way.Because, in the vast majority of these cases, you get what Gilbert AZ got...their DMO being the only bidder that met the minimumn requirements for the contract.Uh-huh.

Points v. Spouse
While I'm guessing that the wording of the question may have artificially skewed the results, the public presentation of a recent Starwood study causes some interesting consideration. When frequent travelers were asked what one thing they would take with them on the road, 73% would choose their loyalty program over their spouse.I'm not exactly sure what this means...but it clearly indicates that marriage ain't what it's cracked up to be.Happy Valentine's Day...

The Pot and the Kettle
By now, you've likely heard of the furor over remarks that Joplin CVB CEO Pat Tuttle made regarding the development of a visitors map that would show the path of last summer's devastating tornado. Whether the reporter embellished the story or Pat got carried away, we'll never really know. But, the news that such a map would be developed has spawned an amazing community discussion over whether visitors are welcome in Joplin, if all they want to do is tour the destruction. The Mayor sees it another way, that of visitors coming to see the progress...and he's good with that. But the fascinating part of the story to me is that the Weather Channel's Mike Bettes did an editorial smackdown of the CVB (which has apparently been removed from their website), saying that making money from a weather disaster was a bad idea.Really, Mike? Because, err, isn't that what the Weather Channel has been doing for the past 30 years?Just sayin....

Karla
Last weekend, I had the sensational pleasure to be in the musical presence of one of my favorite artists in one of the most intimate settings around. You've likely never heard of either. The hall was the Thrasher Opera House in Green Lake, Wisconsin. And Karla Bonoff opened her set by saying how nice it was to be "in the middle of nowhere." True dat.Karla is a songwriter extraordinaire that inexplicably never made it big on her own. From Linda Ronstadt's most evocative hits to movie soundtracks, you know her work. But there is so much more. The performance was simply magical (and there are a couple videos from somebody that clearly sat near me that night on YouTube)...but there is so little compelling video of her amazing body of work. Thus, on this Music Friday, I'm going to send you to her site's video page to experience several clips. If, however, you don't mind YouTube video that has no video, I'll direct you to my two favorites from this exquisite talent: The Letter and Daddy's Little Girl (and, guys, if you have daughters and don't cry at the latter...there's something seriously wrong with you). Both are as compelling as a lyric and its music can be.Thanks, Karla. Please come back soon. And thanks to the Wisconsin Arts Board for making her appearance possible.

No Way to Select a CEO
We've been pretty clear about our feelings regarding "open" executive searches. You know...the kind where the finalists are outed to the media. And, even more bizarre, are put on parade in a public reception like so much livestock on which bids should be made.Honestly? And this advances the community's interests how?I have the utmost respect (and sympathy) for Searchwide, the firm that is handling the search for the new CEO of the Daytona Beach CVB. They would never divulge the short or long list of candidates to me. And, I certainly don't know whether the search committee asked Searchwide to bring a slate of candidates that ignored the best and brightest DMO pros in the nation. But, that would be kinda odd, don'tcha think?Nonetheless...that's pretty much what the final four looks like. With all due respect to the finalists, there are no instantly recognizable "name" candidates on the list. Which is odd for a "name" destination like Daytona Beach.Only one in four is currently employed as a DMO CEO. To be sure, one used to be a DMO CEO. But the other two are from outside the DMO industry. Not to be an "I told you so," but this is exactly the candidate pool I predicted a few weeks ago. Very few (as in ONE) sitting DMO CEOs would put their hat in such a dysfunctional ring. And, thus, Daytona Beach may well have forfeited its chance to lure a significant talent to their destination. One of the four still in play may well be exactly what the destination is looking for...and I wish the ultimate CEO all the luck in the world. But the community will never know if it could have done better, thanks to its (and clearly not Searchwide's) hamhanded handling of the search process.Sigh.

More Fine Reporting
We suggested yesterday that there are those in the Knoxville media that really should find something else to do. When not playing class warfare with a story that was anything but, they question research findings based on the opinion of one man. This Monday, after the Knoxville News-Sentinel and other media outlets had stirred up a hornets nest of discontent over former Knoxville Sports & Tourism Commission CEO Gloria Ray's compensation package, Columnist Tom Humphrey suggested that we should all be skeptical of a recent Longwoods International study of the impact of Tennessee Tourism marketing.Nevermind that Longwoods is one of the most respected firms of its kind in North America...some guy said that he read the study and calls the claims in the report "absurd." And, sadly, that's what makes for news today. Some guy who apparently made some money with an internet play in the '90s and now is in real estate. Yeah...just some guy.Not someone who has studied community economic development. Not someone who has experience in travel marketing and hospitality sales. No...just a guy that is part of the Tea Party movement.Hey Tom? If I were to say that Copernicus' work was absurd and that the Sun revolves around the Earth, would you feature me in an upcoming article?I didn't think so. But, would you if I was in the Tea Party?'Cause that's the only reason you think this guy has credibility. And, that's not good enough.

This Simply Sucks
The Class Warfare that has gripped this country will be its downfall. What people earn has nothing to do with what needs to be done.Gloria Ray, former CEO of the Knoxville Sports & Tourism Corporation, has been under fire for the past few weeks for how much money she makes. Nevermind that her Board chose to pay her at that level for a reason. She made it rain. But, she made "too much," according to the media and the Mayor. After withering public criticism, Gloria resigned her post Friday. And the media responded with a retrospective of just how important Gloria has been to the community.Really? I mean, REALLY?Where the hell where you when this story broke? Oh, yeah...you WERE the story. You fanned the flames of discontent. You made people crazy that a person could make $400,000 doing what y'all simply don't understand is exceptionally difficult to do.You created enough drama that she stepped aside to save the organization from more of your manufactured tripe. And then you eulogize her as being a major player in your community's success?Knoxville Media...you suck. And, you've just cost your community increased visitor spending, taxes and jobs that she could have continued to bring to Knoxville.Proud of yourselves?

Trading One Crime for Another
This weekend's big story might have been the Stupor Bowl (yawn)...but the most interesting came out of South Florida where the wealthy founder of the International Polo Club Palm Beach adopted his 42-year old girlfriend as one of his daughters.Apparently legal, there are those that are accusing the man of merely trying to protect his financial assets as he faces DUI manslaughter charges in a hit-and-run incident.I'm not a lawyer and I never played one on TV...but isn't sleeping with your daughter (even an adopted one) illegal in most States?Just asking...

A Trillion and Counting
After a Trillion Dollars poured into the rat hole that is TSA, it still can't buy a clue.Don't get me wrong, the vast majority of TSA agents I have met in my travels across this country genuinely believe they are making the skies safer for us. A few are just picking up a paycheck. A handful have power issues. And, a few are stealing our shit while we get wanded. But, it's the inane directives and processes coming down from the TSA mothership that gives all the well-meaning agents a black eye. Confiscating holiday snow globes, cupcakes and insulin pumps. Patting down 90-year grandmothers and 6-year old children. The newest? Deporting a couple of Irishmen at LAX after TSA reviewed Tweets from one that said he planned to "destroy America."Except "destroy" is British slang for "get drunk."As a Gizmodo UK writer said: "it's a little amazing and a lot disconcerting that the DHS mess up your holiday because it never learned its context clues."Context indeed. Thanks to my friend Josh Schamberger for the catch!

The Power of Music
It is the soundtrack of our lives. And, those that have been in my audiences when I talk about destination marketing know that I think our industry is generally missing the boat by not connecting prospective visitors to what most of us crave. A cool club with a hot talent.Whether it's a city known for being a music mecca or a community that may not have much nightlife...there is almost always someone playing somewhere every night. Yet, damned if I can find those options on most DMO websites. Which means I will most likely not choose your destination for this weekend's getaway (unless I accidentally stumble upon a club date on an artist's website...like this weekend's gig by Karla Bonoff in Green Lake). And, if I find myself IN your town...my wallet and I will probably stay in tonight. What a waste...for both of us.So...while I wait for Destination Marketers to get a clue, I gotta give props to Gary Sherwin and the Newport Beach CVB for reversing the marketing conversation from service to attraction. The Bureau is the sponsor of a new internet radio play called Rockin California. For the most part, it's a playlist of songs that make you feel like you're on the beach or cruisin the Pacific Coast Highway in a bitchin' Camaro. While there is the occassional Boston and Supertramp song to break the Cali-mood (at least for those of us that are paying attention), the vibe is great and the message is compelling:"Rockin California, Presented by VisitNewportBeach.com. Fall in Love with Newport Beach...and Listen Loud."Cool move, my friends.

Sometimes two different announcements in the same day. Last year, JC Penny e-mailed 590 separate sales alerts. It didn't work, as the average shopper only bought four times last year.So JC Penny is about to radically redesign their strategy, their stores and their culture.
